Senior Software Engineer, Backend & Platform
Full-time · Hybrid
Own product and platform end-to-end — turn research-grade AI capabilities (RAG, agentic workflows, LLM integrations) into reliable, scalable production features.
We at Uthereal are building the AI infrastructure for knowledge-machine interfaces — the layer that lets specialist knowledge owners turn what they know into systems others can query, learn from, and build on, all on their own terms. Founded by ETH Zurich PhDs and ex-Amazon engineers, backed by the ETH AI Center, we're a small team turning frontier research into products experts actually use. Early enough that what you ship defines the platform.
Your role
Own product and platform end-to-end — from user-facing experiences down to the backend services, APIs, infrastructure, and reliability patterns that keep them running in production. You'll help turn research-grade AI capabilities (RAG, agentic workflows, LLM integrations) into reliable, scalable product features that customers depend on.
You should be comfortable building a UI/UX when the work calls for it, but your real strength is understanding complex systems, making pragmatic technical decisions under uncertainty, and shipping robust improvements quickly. You'll work closely with the founders and engineering team to translate ambiguous product and customer needs into clear technical execution — you need to be able to take a lead in delivery and execution.
We're looking for someone who thinks critically, takes ownership, and consistently gets important things shipped. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is looking for this step-up to own and drive progress in an AI startup.
Who you are
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, ideally in fast-moving product or startup environments.
- Strong full-stack background with depth on the backend and infrastructure side (Python or TypeScript, cloud-native development on AWS, containerized deployments).
- Experience building and operating production applications end-to-end — not just prototypes or isolated components.
- Hands-on experience with LLM-powered systems, RAG, or agentic workflows is a strong plus.
- Solid product sense: able to identify which changes matter most to users and avoid overengineering.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity, with a discover-and-learn mindset and high ownership.
- Strong critical thinking: challenges assumptions, finds the real problem, and pushes back when needed.
What we offer
- A high-ownership role in a fast-growing AI startup.
- The opportunity to build core product and platform infrastructure from an early stage.
- Direct impact on product direction and user experience.
- Collaborative research environment in partnership with ETH Zurich, University of Zurich, and leading AI experts.
- Opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking AI technologies that reshape expert knowledge access.
- Competitive compensation with flexible working arrangements.
